FREEDOM SCHOOLS

Freedom Schools were temporary, alternative, and free schools for African Americans mostly in the South. They were originally part of a nationwide effort during the Civil Rights Movement to organize African Americans to achieve social, political and economic equality in the United States.

WEST WILLOW'S ODINDI FREEDOM SCHOOL

The odindi Freedom school embraces a rich blend of academic support & community engagement, featuring guidance from elders within our community. Together we are creating a space where youth can thrive academically, civically and personally.

PROGRAM ACTIVITIES

ACADEMIC SUPPORT

Academic support is facilitated by EMU & U of M School of Social Work Students. Free Wi-fi & access to laptop and tablets during program hours.

READING

Community elders will lead group readings and discussions from the list of books/short stories carefully selected for their lesson & teachings.

CIVIC LEADERSHIP

The Civic Leadership program is designed to help members understand the roles of public officials and develop the skills to contribute to the West Willow community through their civic engagement.

INTERGENERATIONAL ENGAGEMENT

We believe developing a strong relationship with the youth and elders of our community is the key to successful social change in community.

FINANCIAL LITERACY

Financial literacy is a key component to a stronger West Willow. We provide resources and lessons to understand how to navigate finances.

ARTIVISM

Through art sessions we explore historical examples in which art has been utilized as a tool for cultural and social change rooted in justice.

YORUBA 101

Native Yoruba speaker and OYA Village director, Mr. Bambo, will lead language and culture sessions.

DINNER & SNACKS

Program begins with round table dinner gatherings. Once a week we explore the importance of being a global citizen and exploring other countries/cultures through multicultural foods.
