Sankofa Leadership will aid in illuminating historic and systemic injustices within West Willow (WW). WW is 65% Black 3% Haspanic / Latinx and has no convenient shopping within the neighborhood, to list one of the many multifaceted issues expressed by youth. Youth will not only learn about local government but also be centered in what they would like to see in their neighborhood, city, county ect. We understand when youth participate in high quality out-of-school time youth perform better academically, have higher rates of civic engagement, and are more likely to pursue higher education, regardless of socioeconomic status. As youth engage in civic leadership they will also engage in intergenerational learning from their elders in the community. Building off of our Freedom School and Storytelling, Action & Advocacy programs, we understand the importance of being grounded in history and efforts done in the past, while simultaneously embracing non-traditional approaches on taking on issues. While youth within our Sankofa Leadership program will discuss, strategize and mobilize around issues that matter to them, they will also be reminded to go back and get (Sankofa) the wisdom of the elders that have came before them to aid in their decision making. Youth members will be given the task to document their learning through the creation of a youth driven podcast.
